The NETI has a dual purpose. Most obviously, it is intended to give the participants information and some hands-on practice in the elements of effective teaching--course planning, lecturing, active learning, assessment of learning, and dealing with a variety of problems that commonly arise in the life of a faculty member. The workshop is also intended to provide new faculty with tips on getting their careers off to a good start and experienced faculty with instructional materials and methods that they can use in faculty development and new faculty mentoring programs on their own campuses. Experienced faculty who are nominated should therefore be among the better teachers on their campuses, as opposed to teachers having problems and seeking assistance. In a major survey of NETI alumni, a significant number of past participants reported that the workshop had a positive effect on both their students' learning and their student evaluations.

2011 Global Symposium for Engineering Education

Shanghai, China

We are pleased to inform you that the ASEE Global Symposium for Engineering Education in the Global Economy will be held in partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China during October 24- 25, 2011. The Symposium represents an opportunity for ASEE to explore a novel leadership forum and a pilot for possible future activities. Given the current global economic climate, ASEE's leadership also believes the Symposium to represent a prudent re-sizing of ASEE's financial commitment to an international meeting. Therefore, for 2011 only, the Symposium is being held in lieu of the ASEE Global Colloquium. Those who had intended to or have already submitted a paper to the Global Colloquium, please click here to read about an opportunity to submit your paper to the Annual Conference of the European Society for Engineering Education.

The Symposium will bring together high level policy makers and thought leaders drawn from the academic, government, and corporate sectors into collaborative discussions exploring the role of schools of engineering as innovation engines for the global economy. Selected talks and panels will highlight current activities such as new research parks in China; innovative educational approaches in Asia and the US; translation engineering research, workforce issues and entrepreneurship; and global partnerships between universities, industry and government. Focused working groups will identify opportunities for new initiatives and partnerships that can further the role of engineering education as a global economic driver. The application and invitation process is being developed.

Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club

The annual ASEE Engineering Deans Institute (EDI) provides an opportunity for engineering deans- and only deans- to gather and discuss the crucial issues facing their schools, colleges, and profession. For a few days, a single-stream program fosters dialogue between deans, industry leaders, and those in important roles in research and government. Deans share best practices, learn about career prospects for their graduates, and develop a voice for engineering education and the role of engineering in society. Social activities and plenty of time for conversation encourage the cultivation of relationships and an intensely rewarding experience.

EDI is sponsored by the ASEE Engineering Deans Council and its Executive Board.

American Indian Science and Engineering Society Annual Leardership Conference: Minneapolis, Minnesota

This year’s theme: Food for Thought is subject to both a literal and a figurative interpretation.

Figuratively, Food for Thought connotes intellectual nourishment and spurs new ideas – ways our STEM students and professionals can help respond to the needs and challenges of our community and world, today and tomorrow. Literally, the theme invites a diversity of perspectives on food supply, health, environmental, and resource issues facing our world today.

Not lost in the dialogue is the pertinence of this year’s theme as it relates to the conference host city. Minneapolis (and its Twin sister City, St. Paul) constitutes a major U.S. agricultural hub, with 81,000 farms totaling nearly half of the state’s 54 million acres, and an agriculture and food industry that is the 2nd largest employer in the state.

The mission of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is to substantially increase the representation of American Indian and Alaskan Natives in engineering, science and other related technology disciplines.
