Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM (TIES) is committed to giving each student access to authentic, applied STEM education and the opportunities for a meaningful future that accompany it. We do this by connecting stakeholders—educators, funders, community organizations, businesses, government agencies and others—who, through collaborative partnerships, create meaningful STEM learning experiences for all learners, particularly those underrepresented or underserved. Together with these partners, we use the Engineering Design Process to design solutions including STEM learning ecosystems, digital fabrication labs and makerspaces, STEM schools, and STEM experiences.
To support our collaborative work, TIES is seeking a contract (1099) position for a Mobile Digital Fabrication Lab Manager to staff a Mobile Digital Fabrication and Machining Van in North Carolina to provide support January – May 2021.
It is preferred, but not required, that candidates reside in Harnett or Onslow County, North Carolina.
The Mobile Digital Fabrication Lab Manager will be responsible for the overall operation of the Mobile Fabrication and Machining Van as it is deployed to three high schools in Onslow and Harnett Counties, North Carolina. The Mobile Digital Fabrication Lab Manager will work with TIES and the school personnel to provide Digital Fabrication and Machining enhancements to the CTE and Robotics programs which exist in the identified high schools. S/He will introduce staff and students to the Mobile Digital Fabrication and Machining Lab and manage their training on the use of the Digital Fabrication Lab software, computers, and machining equipment. The Mobile Digital Fabrication Lab Manager will also serve to promote the opportunities to bring the Mobile Lab to the community and grow partnerships with STEM SENC (Southeastern North Carolina) STEM Learning Ecosystem. The Mobile Digital Fabrication Lab Manager will also establish protocols for safe and effective use of the Mobile Lab and monitor and maintain optimal safety conditions. S/He will be responsible for the maintenance of equipment, management of supplies and inventory, as well as scheduling and supervision of the Mobile Lab and its staff.
Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM-related field and at least two years of recent professional experience in the education area that could include Middle or High School STEM Teaching.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Experience working with CAD/CAM applications and design software (Corel Draw, Tinker Cad, Inventor, Fusion 360).
- Experience with Digital Fabrication equipment such as a laser cutter, CNC router and 3-D Printer, and vinyl cutter.
- Experience working in or using manufacturing/industrial/machining equipment such as lathes, drill presses, welders and band saws
- Excellent oral, written, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in common desktop applications (web browsing, Microsoft Office, image editing, etc.).
- Ability to work in a team-based environment with demonstrated flexibility, initiative, and collegiality.
- Must have strong general management, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills, as well as technical knowledge and a strong attention to detail.

The time commitment for this position is up to 560 hours over approximately 15 weeks, from January 2021-May 2021. The Mobile Digital Fabrication Lab Manager would work during school hours, Monday-Friday, with the Mobile Fabrication and Machining Van deployed at each high school for approximately five weeks. There may be an opportunity for the Mobile Fabrication and Machining Van to participate in community events to showcase the Lab. These events would be held outside normal school day and the Lab manager would be paid for his/her time at these events.
